Running Fears

One of my running fears is being heckled. Usually I go to the gym or run at the butt-crack of dawn to avoid this. I had planned on going to the gym after taking my daughter to school and my son to his speech therapy this morning (I completely spaced on my son's speech therapy today and thought it started at 9:15, when it actually ended at 9:15. Ah, well.).

Anyway, driving home the sky was just so blue and the air so cold and crisp, I was just being beckoned to run outdoors. Unfortunately, they're doing some construction work on one of the main streets I'd be running up and down on. And I always have it in my brain that construction workers = being heckled. I consulted the husband and he told me I should just stay in because it was so cold outside (it was around thirty-something°) or change my route.

However, since I don't like change, I manned-up, dressed warmly and headed out. Unfortunately after running up the first hill, I turned around and headed back home. My pants were too big and kept falling. (By the way, it takes me approximately 2 minutes to run up the first hill.) The husband saw me and commented, "That was fast." Hehe. I changed pants and headed back out.

I only saw one construction worker and he was busy working on his wall. So my fears were for naught.

The first mile felt great (since it's mostly downhill after that first hill). The second mile started to kill me (since it's mostly uphill). I had to stop and walk for a couple of minutes because I was getting too hot in my jacket. Taking it off was a complicated matter as I had to take off my gloves, Garmin and iPod first. I did this while walking down the last portion of a hill so as not to walk going up, thereby "cheating."

Anyway, what used to be an easy run for me turned out to be a bit hard. I think running on the treadmill at the gym spoiled me. My glutes are pretty sore from all the hills. I'll post my splits once I upload my time.

Looks like I need to run outside more often.

  1. I am a big fan of running outside. I have this mental block when it comes to the treadmill. I love the feeling of the wind on my face, hearing the crunch of my shoes on snow (in the winter months, at least).

I get honked at fairly often when I'm running outside. It scares me, mostly because when I'm running I am in this focused zone and the honk rips me right out of my run and into a frenzy (and irritation). Ah well. I guess it is just something that comes with the territory!
